► (1340-1400) Poeta inglés. Autor de obras poéticas, como El libro de la duquesa (1369). Su obra maestra es Los cuentos de Canterbury (1386-1400), narraciones inspiradas en el Decamerón.

Poeta inglés. Nacido de una familia de clase media, fue cortesano, diplomático, funcionario civil y poeta de vocación. Gozó del favor real de tres monarcas durante su activa y variada carrera. Dedicó a la duquesa de Lancaster su primer poema importante, Libro de la duquesa (1369/70), una elegía en que se describe una visión onírica. En la década de 1380 produjo obras de mayor madurez, entre ellas El parlamento de las aves, una visión onírica con ocasión del día de San Valentín, donde relata una asamblea de aves en que estas eligen a sus parejas; el magnífico romance trágico en verso Troilo y Criseida, y la visión onírica La leyenda de las mujeres virtuosas (sin terminar). Su obra más conocida, Cuentos de Canterbury (escrita entre 1387–1400), que no llegó a terminar, es una intrincada narración conversacional que cuenta lo que conversan varios peregrinos que se dirigen al santuario de santo Tomás Becket, en Canterbury, como recurso para enmarcar un gran número de historias; no sólo es una de las obras literarias más famosas del medioevo inglés, sino también una de las grandes creaciones de la literatura inglesa. En esta y otras obras, Chaucer estableció el dialecto sureño como la lengua literaria de Inglaterra. Es considerado el primer gran poeta inglés.
